Abstract

VAP is a common, if not the most frequent cross-infection among ICU patients; it is a disease with high morbidity and mortality, which has been exacerbated in the last quinquennium by antibiotic resistance, making the management of cases difficult, increasing the mortality rate and healthcare expenses (either by increased antibiotic consumption, hospital stay, biosafety equipment and consumption of medical supplies).

Resistance is increased due to the inappropriate use of antibiotics by both the healthcare and agricultural sectors, as well as the ability of bacterial cells to form biofilms. Biofilms are polymeric matrix structures formed by one or more bacterial species, which allow the survival of the microorganisms that constitute them on both organic and inorganic surfaces. This review article provides a brief analysis of the relationship between VAP and biofilms in the ICU.
