Validation of an educational model, based on learning styles, for practical microbiology in medicine

Abstract

Teachers in medical schools often face challenges in improving student satisfaction with the learning environment. Therefore, an adaptation to specific learning styles is required to keep up with the information acquired. The present work describes the validation process of a didactic model, designed by the authors, for the practical microbiology subject in the medical career, centered on the learning styles of Honey and Mumford. This model is also based on competency-based learning, in such a way that the contents of the subject are accompanied by competencies to be acquired, entrusted professional activities and milestones that must be achieved by students. It is an action research, which was based on planning (developing the model), acting, observing and reflecting (validating the model) about the learning styles of the students and the competencies that must be acquired in the practical microbiology subject. The proposed model was validated by interviewing teachers of the microbiology in medicine course, who analyzed the proposed model and assigned values ??according to the Likert scale, from 1 to 5 (disagree-strongly agree); then Cronbach's Alpha was calculated. Validation values ??from acceptable to excellent were obtained from the proposed model. This work provides a modern and novel tool for teaching practical microbiology in medicine.
